About us

Drums icon Mike Chananie's Drumshop is nestled in the valley of Drummond, KwaZulu Natal. A small, but highly professional, drum making workshop that produces quality handmade percussion instruments, from alien and local woods. Great care is taken in the individual manufacture of these Slatted Djembes and Ashikos.

Michael Chananie - owner; manufacturer; facilitator and hand percussionist, realised that the way to build on the manufacture of these instruments, was to introduce the Djembe to as many people as possible. Starting with monthly Drum Circles this grew to introducing the Djembe to various local schools, 2 of whom developed drum ensembles with the continuous assistance of Talking Drums.

All Talking Drums' Djembes are handmade by Michael, guaranteeing a quality percussion instrument for each participant. Currently sessions of up to 200 participants can be facilitated.

Talking Drums is also open for the sale of all its hand made percussion instruments thereby keeping the cost of a totally locally made product within the reach of the general public.

We had a truly enjoyable time drumming across all 4 sessions. During the day each group was broken into smaller teams; focusing on mental and physical exercises. The evening sessions were intended to round off the day by pulling everyone together with one objective in mind – to unwind and have fun, whilst appreciating each other's company – and this is exactly what Talking Drums helped us achieve, every session, without fail!
