TIMBER Mainly alien, invasive, exotic woods, that are cleared from residential properties are used, viz., Jacaranda and Camphor. Both these woods have excellent carving properties, are medium density and very resistant to cracking.
Left to Right: Slatted Kiaat; Camphor; 3 x Kiaat; Cedar; 2 x Kiaat Shells SKINS Hand drums are covered with goat skin, the thickness of which determines some of the sound. A thin skin will give a very high pitched tone sound, whereas thick will mellow the pitch. Bass ports are covered with a thick hide, normally cow, the thickness of which determines the depth of the bass. SYNTHETIC HEADS We have developed a custom made ring system for synthetic heads, e.g., Remo, Dixon, Mapex. Obviously the drum size is then dictated by the head size. The head of the drum shell in this instance is generally 2,5cm smaller than the synthetic head that is used. Various colours are available, e.g., black, cream, white and clear. These heads' sounds range from warm and mellow through the spectrum to sharp, bright tones. They are also superbly responsive. They seldom need re-tuning, are durable, weather resistant and a quick wipe down with a damp cloth makes it look like new again. These drums are only made to order with a 50% deposit being payable on placement of order.
